The risks of using weblogs are the same as with any other public website. Authors should ensure that their weblog contains no information that could potentially identify them or allow them to be located geographically. Likewise, references to family members or friends, or images and photos, should be posted with caution. This is especially important if young people are creating their own blogs.

Authors should also take care with the contents of their postings – free expression is fine, but postings must not be defamatory or libelous, or infringe upon the intellectual property rights of others.

Readers of weblogs should take care to evaluate the content that they find, and remember that most weblogs are based on personal opinion and not necessarily fact. While weblogs give a free voice for anyone to air their views, there is a risk that readers could be exposed to postings that are inappropriate. Despite authors having to agree to terms and conditions before using blogging tools, there is a risk that postings could be pornographic, hateful or violent in nature, encourage activities that are dangerous or illegal, or are just age-inappropriate or biased.
